Open letter from the running community

Dear Jean-Yves Le Drian!

Runners from different countries appeal to you with an unusual request. We have a proposal to establish the World Running Day. We invite France to take the initiative at the United Nations to set this international date.
France is respected member of the United Nations. Your country's contribution to uniting the peoples of different countries in order develop sports is undeniable. Paris will host the Summer Olympic Games in 2024. Some of us have already taken part in the Paris marathon and they very excited. We hope to take part in the Paris Marathon many more times and to become it’s finishers.
If it works, runners all over the world will be grateful to diplomats and will be happy to celebrate not only the new World Running Day, but also the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace.
Dear Jean-Yves Le Drian, please, try to read attentively and understand our position.
Currently, the calendar of International Days established by the United Nations includes International Day of Yoga, World Bicycle Day, World Chess Day, and World Tourism Day. An absence of such day as World Running Day is very surprising.
Taking into account the significant contribution that running makes to people's lives in terms of physical and emotional health, taking the popularity and availability of running, this is more than irrational. Obviously, running is the most natural sport and it is an effective way to maintain good physical shape. Amateur running does not require special expensive equipment. Running is simple and equally understandable to people of all countries and continents. Also, running has a rich history.
Unfortunately, in the context of the coronavirus pandemic, a many mass running starts in many countries are being canceled. Of course, this entails a loss of motivation for millions of runners in the world. In addition, as a result of forced restrictive measures, runners do not always have the opportunity to train in their usual formats. The world must respond to the existing challenges - it is necessary to find new solutions for competitions, and to create new comfortable running locations for training, that exclude the crowding of runners. More than ever before, we should strive to ensure that the number of people engaged in physical education and sports to not decrease, but to increase, in order to slightly compensate the negative effects of the pandemic on the physical and emotional health of the population, changes in the usual way of life of people at least.
We realize that the establishment of world running day will not automatically create conditions for runners. Stadiums, indoor arenas, and recreational areas that are accessible to residents will not immediately appear. But this day will be another reason to think about the fact that people need comfortable paths for running, walking, and Cycling. Green areas should be protected and not allowed to be built up and laying paving slabs in parks and squares is not the best way to improve them.
We believe that the establishment of World Running Day will create prerequisites for solving such problems, at least by attracting the attention of state and civil institutions to this popular type of physical activity every year. And, of course, this date will be a holiday and additional motivation for a large army of runners and for those who use running in their sports training.
We understand that today humanity is facing significant threats-epidemics, military conflicts, terrorism, and climate disasters. It may seem to someone frivolous to introduce such an initiative to the UN. But let's take a closer look at the existing calendar of international dates adopted by General Assembly resolutions:
https://www.un.org/en/observances/list-days-weeks
We will see there: World Bee Day, International Girls in ICT Day, Sustainable Gastronomy Day, International Asteroid Day, World Toilet Day (by the way, this year it coincided with the celebration of World Philosophy Day), International Day of Family Remittances, World Tuna Day.
The topic of these dates is not in the focus of most people, and may seem at first glance even a little far-fetched. At the same time, it is certain that the establishment of the above dates on close inspection is justified and significant when considered in depth. And, to draw attention to these rather narrow topics, the resources of this most important international organization were fully used.
We believe that the importance of running in human life, together with the UN treatments to sustainable human development, will allow World Running Day to take its deserved place in the calendar of International Dates.
It’s worth noting that the request for World Running Day has every fan of running all over the world. Currently, in the absence of such a recognized official holiday, various surrogate dates are used. One of these dates that has been spreading in recent years is Global Running Day, held on the first Wednesday in June at the same time as National running day in the United States. According to statistics from the event's organizers www.globalrunningday.org , there are a lot of runners taking part, but not enough for a world event.
We certainly believe that in order to unite the inhabitants of the whole world, it is necessary to start not from the national calendar of one country, even if it is a large, but to establish a single date that will be common to all, approving it in the United Nations, as it should be in accordance with the procedures adopted for establishing international days. Then World Running Day will be a significant date for runners around the world.
We consider it possible to suggest April 10 as the date of world running day. It was on this day that the first marathon was held during the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. We see a very symbolic link between sports date that is being established and the event of the revival of the Olympic movement. Amateur runners cannot claim Olympic gold medals, but they value and share the Olympic principles and believe that sport contributes to the cause of peace. It should be noted that the "Olympians" also pay tribute to the world running movement - for the first time in the history of the Olympic games, tens of thousands of amateur runners will be able to take part in the marathon on the same track and in the same conditions as the athletes participating in the Games at the Paris Olympics in 2024.
Before suggesting the date April 10, we made sure that it does not overlap with other dates in the calendar of International Dates.
We took the liberty of developing a draft resolution of the UN General Assembly on the establishment of World Running Day in order to accelerate the implementation of this idea (attached).
Dear Jean-Yves Le Drian. Running is not just a sport. In our letter, we are writing not for the sake of professional athletes, but for creating conditions and motivating ordinary people to run. We would be very grateful if you would treat with understanding our offer. We are looking forward to your help.

Respectfully, running enthusiasts
